KATHMANDU, Nepal–Today is May 29, the historical day when legendary mountaineers duo Sir Edmund Hilary and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa ascent the world’s highest peak in 1953. Hundreds of people in the capital Kathmandu take part in the rallies to observe the 61st anniversary of the first conquest of Mount Everest and to commemorate the 16 falling Sherpa guides who killed in avalanche on 18 April, just above Everest´s base camp. Kancha Sherpa, 81, living legend of 1953 expedition, led a rally of 500 from tourism and mountaineering organisations.  Kancha arrived in Kathmandu from his home town Namche Bazar  this morning to attend the programmes to mark the day. Kancha who had carried loads up the peak for the expedition and went up to the last camp on Everest, joined Tenzing’s team after his father Angbabu sent him to Darjeeling to support Tenzing’s. A separate rally was held Wednesday night in memory of the 16 fallen Sherpa guides. Chanting the slogan, the participants held candles and pictures of those who died in the disaster. The government has already announced that Everest day would not be observed this time as “it coincides with Republic Day” on May 29. However the day is being observed with much fanfare in the initiation of private sectors that are waging protests against government and Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) for the economic irregularities in the Board. Legendary mountaineer Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa conquered Everest in 1953. Since then thousands of people have reached the 8,850-metre peak. Tenzing Norgay died in Darjeeling, India, in 1986 at age 71. Hillary, who died of heart attack in 2008 at the age of 88, had attended the golden jubilee celebration of the conquest in 2003.
