(English) Porters turning into millionaire in Khumbu

KATHMANDU, Nepal–Dilli Magar of Tamakhani in Solukhumbu reached Khumbu area of the district as a tourist porter few years ago. Magar, who worked as a foreign tourist porter and hotel worker, is now an owner of  a house and hotel at Syangboche airport.

Magar who mainly arranges chopper flights at Syangboche airport by profession became a millionaire in Khumbu. Even though, a local law prohibits for those outsider willing to purchase land in tourist hub Khumbu, it became possible for him after making a love with a girl who tied nuptial knot with Magar.

According to him, a porter has as good fortune as that of trekkers and guides in the district.

Likewise, Dil Thapa Magar of Dhading had landed to Namche as a porter nearly two decades ago. He has managed to run a hotel after working for nine years as a worker. He is now an owner of three hotels including the Khumbu Mountain View Lodge, Hotel Everest at Namche, and Nest, according to government owned publication Gorkhapatra daily.

Ram Lama of Timal, Kavre also made trip to at Debuche in Khumjung a decade ago and worked as a porter for some years. With the passing of the time, the same porter is the owner Himalayan Lunch Spot at Syomare. He said he has a good income in the season.

They are the representative characters. There are many who have said to be turned into land lords and millionaire after working as a porter and worker in the area.

Some two dozen people who toiled as worker and porter have run hotels on their own according to a hotelier Dilli Magar, the daily further reported.
