KATHMANDU, Nepal–The members of the Nepali women climbers’ team that recently scaled Mount K2 (8,611m), the world’s second highest peak, in Pakistan said they witnessed fast melting glaciers due to the changing weather phenomenon during their successful ascent.

With an aim to raise global awareness on global warming and challenge posed by rapid melting of glaciers, team members Maya Sherpa, 35, from Okhaldhunga, Dawa Yanjung Sherpa, 25, from Dolakha, and Pasang Lhamu Sherpa, 29, from Solukhumbu had conquered Mount K2.

Maya Sherpa, who has 11 years of mountaineering experience and has already ascended Mt Everest twice, said they could see muddy surface with naked rocks along their path, making mountaineering risky. She also said that rapidly melting glaciers have resulted in widened streams, threatening people living downstream.
