KATHMANDU, Nepal–The search for two Sherpas and an Indian climber who have gone missing in Mount Kangchenjunga (8,586m), the world’s third highest peak standing near the borders between Nepal, India and China has been halted due to bad weather.

Indian climber Chhanda Gayen, 34, and two accompanying Sherpas went missing at an elevation of around 7,000m after an avalanche hit the area on Tuesday.

A rescue helicopter flown to the avalanche hit area to rescue the three climbers on Thursday morning returned back due to adverse weather, an official at the Tourism Ministry said.

The climbers were near to the summit of the western side of Kangchenjunga when the avalanche hit them on Tuesday afternoon, Mingma Sherpa, managing director of the trekking company which organised the expedition, was quoted as saying in The Telegraph newspaper.
