KATHMANDU, Nepal – The stakeholders here have agreed to effectively implement the provision that seedlings and the related products could be imported to Nepal only after following the quarantine process.

A joint meeting between stakeholders and officials at the Regional Plant Quarantine Office, Birgunj decided to strictly implement rule on import of seedlings and the related products after the locals mounted complaints on import of diseased and non-standard plants and seedlings through the border custom points, according to the state-run news agency RSS.

The plant quarantine process must be abided strictly while importing seedlings in order to control plant diseases.

According to the meeting, even an awareness programme would be launched on the supply of the saplings and plants.

Lack of coordination and cooperation among the government bodies has resulted in slack implementation of the provision on import of the seedlings, RSS quoted Chief Quarantine Officer at Birgunj, Abadhesh Kumar Singh as saying.

Every custom office, according to Quarantine Officer Singh, must check the quarantine paper before collecting revenue.
