Everest climbing rules to be tougher

KATHMANDU, Nepal- With the world celebrating the 60 years of first human ascent of Mount Everest, the government of Nepal is preparing to revise the rules on climbing Everest, hinting the expedition not easy for all that used to be until today.

Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation, Ram Kumar Shrestha said that the government will update the existing rules and regulations to address the decry over future of the world’s highest peak.

“The government now onwards will control Everest expeditions,” said the minister, adding, “permit will be issued only after studying the age, health condition and motive of the climber behind the climbing”.

Speaking at a function organised to felicitate record holder climbers, family of Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa in Kathmandu, minister Shrestha said the lose policy has increased the trend of malpractices in expeditions.

At the function, Tourism Secretary Sushil Ghimire, Officiating chief executive officer of Nepal Tourism Board Subash Niroula among other guests have expressed their views on importance of Mt Everest and the need to preserve it for the mankind.

During the function, TAAN has awarded journalists from different media houses with tourism and mountaineering awards.
