(English) 260 people killed, scores missing during this monsoon

KATHMANDU, Nepal–As many as 260 people were killed, 160 have been injured and 254 have gone missing in numerous incidents of floods and landslides that affected 42 districts across the country this monsoon so far.

According to latest report of natural disaster-caused damages presented at Parliament, a total of 8,488 houses were completely destroyed while 23,248 houses suffered partial damage in the monsoon rains-triggered flooding and landslide.

Properties worth Rs 7.79 billion was damaged in the incidents of natural disaster across the country. According to the report, victim families have so far been offered with foodstuff worth Rs 61.5 million and other assistance equivalent to Rs 47.7 million.

Likewise, foodstuffs sufficient for the next 10 days for the victims and cloths have been allocated to the affected districts, according to the report prepared by the Office of Prime Minister and Council of Minister.

Of 42 districts affected by flooding and landslides, deaths were reported in 40 districts. Sindhupalchowk, Bardiya, Surkhet, Banke, Dang, Jajarkot, Salyan and Kailali were the hardest hit.

Among the flood-hit districts, Sindhupalchwok is the worst affected. A total of 33 were confirmed dead, 47 injured and 123 went missing in the August 2 landslide. Likewise, 434 have been displaced.

Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Bamdev Gautam  said that as much support as possible in relief and rescue was being extended by the government and the legislature using all resources available.

The government has also been asked to table a long-term strategy and present the Natural Disaster Act before the parliament immediately.
