KATHMANDU, Nepal-A total of 780 kg of garbage was collected from the Mt Everest area during a week-long clean-up campaign that kicked off on July 3.
With an aim to raise public awareness to keep the environment neat and clean and improve the livelihoods of the people in the Mt Everest, ‘The Greater Khumbu Cleaning Campaign, 2013′ was kicked off in Khumbu region two weeks ago.
According to Officer of SPCC Kapindra Rai a total of 190 kg of trash was collected from the Everest Base Camp area, while 200 kg of rubbish was collected from the Island Pick base camp area.
During the campaign, garbage was also collected from Pangboche, Dingboche, Labuche, Thukla and Forche in the Solukhumbu district.
The weeklong campaign was conducted jointly by Sagarmatha Pollution Control Committee (SPCC) and Eco Himal Nepal, an NGO working in environment sectors with the slogan ‘Our Garbage, Our Responsibility: Clean Environment, Our Existence’.
The campaign is held each year to spread awareness among the locals.
Over 80 people including Ananta Kumar Basnet, administrator at Namche Border Report from Khumbu said SPCC program officer Rai and Lakpa Sherpa, coordinator of Eco Himal at Namche had took part the drive.
During the week long drive, plastic, glass bottles and other wastes scattered across the Everest area were collected.
In the meantime, some of the collected waste was destroyed at Labuche in Khumjung while the remaining trash was brought to SPCC for the proper management.
