(English) Heavy snowfall hits hilly region

KATHMANDU, Nepal–Heavy snowfall caused by the southern cyclone called ‘Hudhud’ has hit the normal life in the hilly district Mustang.

With the rainfall across the nation since Monday, many VDCs in the district, have witnessed a three-inch high snowfall, said Arnapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) In-charge Santosh Sherchan.

“With the snowfall, the temperature has dropped down sharply,” Sherchan was quoted by national news agency RSS as saying adding tourists in and around Lomanthang area have been hit hard by the snowfall that has been occurring since two days.

In the meantime, Over 50 per cent of domestic flights were cancelled and many international flights had to be diverted from Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) Tuesday due to bad weather conditions triggered by Cyclone ‘Hudhud ’, .

TIA officials said most domestic flights, including mountain flights, were cancelled due to poor visibility induced by heavy rain.

Three ultra light and 19 paragliding companies suspended their services, according to Nepal Air Sports Association, Pokhara.

Tourism entrepreneurs said the sudden change in weather conditions during the peak tourist season had affected many tourists.

In view of the tourist season, different airlines have added flights on the Kathmandu-Pokhara-Jomsom route, recently.
