KATHMANDU, Nepal-Himalayan nation Nepal has comparatively improved its ranking in Transparency International’s Corruption Perceptions Index, according to a latest report made public by Britain based Transparency International (TI). However, there is not such a complete situation at which Nepal can get satisfied fully as it still languish in the list of most corrupt countries in the world.
The CPI – 2013 published on Tuesday ranked Nepal at 116 positions out of 176 countries. Nepal obtained 31 points on a scale of 0-100 with 0 denoting the most corrupt while 100 very clean in the context of corruption.
Nepal still ranks in the list of corrupt countries as the countries obtaining less than 50 points have been listed as the most corrupt countries by TI.
In 2012 report unveiled of TI, Nepal stood 154 positions with 27 points.
‘Due to efforts made in the sectors of good governance, appointments at various constitutional positions, verdicts in corruption cases and action initiated by the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority against corruption, Nepal managed to score 31 points’, the international anti- corruption watchdog said.
According to report, Albania and Vietnam too stand at 116th position, along with Nepal. More than two thirds of 177 countries have scored less than 50 points while Neighboring India and China ranked at 94th and 80th position, respectively.
Denmark and New Zealand are very clean countries with both scoring 91 points each while Afghanistan, North Korea and Somalia are listed as highly corrupt countries, each of them scoring eight.
The TI stated that the index was prepared based on the experts’ opinions of public sector corruption and strong access to information system and rules governing the behavior of those in public positions.
