Nepal elected to UNESCO Executive Board

KATHMANDU,Nepal-Nepal has been elected in the Executive Board of UNESCO on Wednesday during the organisation’s 37th General Conference held in Paris.

‘Nepal has been elected for the tenure of four years,’ an official at UNESCO’s Kathmandu office informed. Nepal was able to win 144 votes from 185 voter countries.

The Executive Board, as the executive organ of the UNESCO, conducts the programme fixed by the General Conference. It issues recommendation for the admission of prospective new member States of the United Nations. The board also calls international and non-governmental conferences on education, natural sciences and humanities.

Nepal was admitted to UNESCO in 1953. Nepal is home to ten UNESCO World Heritage sites including the Sagarmatha National Park, Kathmandu’s durbar squares and Boudhanath.
