(English) First expedition death at Everest

KATHMANDU, Nepal–Everest region saw the first death of a climbing member this spring. Mingma Tenzing Sherpa of Namche Bazaar died due to high altitude pulmonary edema (HAPE) on April 1 while working at the Everest Base Camp, according to reports from Lukla. Sherpa was organising the base camp when he complained of uneasiness.

Sherpa was rushed to a clinic in Pheriche run by Himalayan Rescue Association. The doctors there diagnosed HAPE.

He was airlifted to the capital Kathmandu the next morning but died while undergoing treatment at the hospital from pulmonary edema.

Sherpa was working with Canadian guide service Peak Freaks.
