(English) Mountaineering association gets new leader

KATHMANDU, Nepal– Ang Tsering Sherpa has been elected the new President of Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA), the umbrella organization of mountain tourism entrepreneurs.

Sherpa won 473 votes in the election held for the post at its annual general meeting here in Kathmandu. His nearest rival was Nima Norbu Sherpa of Cho-Oyu Trekking Agency. Nima secured 391 votes in the polls.

Born on November 15, 1953 in Khumjung village of Solukhumbu district, newly elected . Ang Tshering Sherpa has been working in mountain tourism sector. He is also the owner of Asian Trekking Pvt. Ltd which organizes trekking package, mountain expedition to Everest and other activities related with mountain tourism.

Also the honorary member of Union of International Alpine Association (UIAA) , newly elected Sherpa said he would work ahead with the cooperation of all for mountain tourism development and promote mountain tourism in Nepal through an action plan at the international level.

As a student, he had embarked on studies to become a doctor but he could not complete it due to various reasons.

Founded in the year 1973, the national mountaineering association aims to promote the mountaineering activities in the Himalayan region, safeguard the interest and upgrade the professional and mountaineering skill of Nepalese mountaineers.

The NMA is the founder member of Union of Asian Alpine Association (UAAA) and also an active member of UIAA.
