KATHMANDU, Nepal– In this facebook post image, the members of the indigenous Kirat and Rai community attired in traditional dresses seem performing Sakela Udhauli dance in Kathmandu on Tuesday, December 17, 2013. The literal meaning of Udhauli is descending below from the mountains. During winter, the birds, animals as well as human being in upper hills migrate to lower lands to ward off excessive cold; hence the festival also denotes the relation with nature.On the occasion, the government has announced public holiday on Tuesday. Moreover, the festival also highlights the agricultural aspects of the community as the dance is also a way of thanks- giving to nature for providing them with best crops.
