KATHMANDU, Nepal- Thamel, the main tourist hub in Kathmandu has seen a boom in numbers of Chinese tourists recent days.

To welcome their northern guests the Thamel shoppers and entrepreneurs have transformed their shops and business stops into a cluster of Chinese commerce.

With the country’s tourism scene dominated by the influx of Chinese tourists lately, businesses targeting them are also mushrooming.

Restaurants, hotels, travel agencies, shops are strictly targeting the Chinese tourists.

The street stretch are crowded with signs in Chinese: Hotels offer their room rates and services, restaurants display their menus and travel agencies plaster their windows with itineraries strictly in the script that would attract their targeted customers.

Mahesh Parajuli, who runs a money exchange in Thamel, shared that the arrivals of Chinese tourists have increased in Thamel of late. They are shy in nature but are cooperating if dealt professionally, Parajuli shared his experience. “I am happy in a sense that they are increasing my business,” he grinned.

According to the statistics of Tribhuvan International Airport, Nepal greeted 28, 832 more Chinese tourists through air route during the first six months of 2013 as compared to the same period last year.
