13 people buried to death, 5 missing in landslides

KATHMANDU, Nepal-At least 13 people have been buried to death including five of a family and five people were missing in separate landslides triggered by heavy rainfall in different parts of the country, throwing the  lives out of gear.

Three people were buried to death in a landslide that took place in Khanichap VDC-7, Palpa district, located at south-west of Capital Kathmandu. Prem Kumari Darlami,14, and eight-year-old Bishnu Darlami died when the house of Bhim Bahadur Darlami in the VDC was buried in a landslide. They were reportedly watching the television at the house of neighbor Tibir Darlami on Sunday evening, according to police.

Similarly, one person died when a house collapsed in Pipaldanda-7 of the district. Durga Bahadur Sunari,56, killed when his house broke down following incessant rainfall. Sunari’s 13-year-old son Chabi Lal was seriously injured in the incident. He is undergoing treatment at the United Mission Hospital in Tansen.

In the meantime, report from Dolkha said five members of a family were killed when their house was swept away by landslide in the remote Marbu VDC of the district on Sunday night.

Pale Thami,70, his 70-year-old wife Subha Laxmi Thami, Jamuna Thami,45, Binod Thami, 15, and one another member of the family died in the incident.    Their bodies were recovered Monday morning. Only one member of the family, who fortunately escaped the house, survived the incident, according to police.

Likewise, three persons, including a three-month-old baby died in a landslide occurred at various parts of Syangja district, 235 kilometer far south-west of Capital Kathmandu, Monday. Dil Bahadur Sarki , 30 at Gyamswara of Chinnebas-7 died after he was buried in a landslide.

Similarly, 24-year-old Rita Bhattarai from Kuwakot VDC-4, died after she was buried in the landslide while fetching drinking water. In another incident three months old daughter of Kamal BK from Khani village of Sekham VDC-7 died after the landslide collapsed BK’s house, local Surya Sharma told Nepal Mountain Focus.

Yet in another incident, five people have gone missing in a landslide that took place at Rakachuli-9 of Nawalparasi district on Monday. According to the Area Police Office, Kawasoti, those disappeared in the landslides are Fulman Singh Rai, 40; Dhansing Rai, 60; Bimala Rai, 22; Sajita Rai, 10; Tilak Chandra Rai, 6. They went missing after the house belonging to Funlam Singh collapsed and buried in landslide.

Similarly, a couple from Bhakimli VDC-8 was killed when a landslide buried their house, report from Myagdi dsitrict said. Police said security personnel and Red Cross staffers have been deployed at the scene to pull out their bodies from the debris.
