Travel agencies under scan, 16 illegally operating in Kathmandu

govt logoKATHMANDU, Nepal- Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation (MoCTCA) has begun monitoring travel agencies serving in the Kathmandu valley. The Ministry initiated to scan the activities of those travel agencies which were operating sans getting  permission from the government, amid the complains that most of the travel agencies were cheating the people.

A total of 16 travel agencies operating in Thamel and Sinamangal areas of capital Kathmandu were found serving without getting permission from the government, the Ministry during the course of the investigation has disclosed.

According to Purna Chandra Bhattarai, chief of the tourism industry division under MoCTCA, out of total 29 travel agencies serving in Thamel, four are found to be operating illegally. Likewise, 12 travel agencies of Sinamangal, close to Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) were also found operating without acquiring government’s permission.

The Ministry has summoned those agencies operating illegally in Thamel to furnish clarification, while three such agencies have already closed in Sinamangal.

The existing government legislation has it that a travel agency after duly registering at the Company Registrar´s Office needs acquire permit from the tourism industry division under MoCTCA after showing bank deposit of Rs 300,000.

Altogether twenty two hundred travel agencies are currently operating across the nation.
