KATHMANDU, Nepal-With an aim to preserve the cultural heritage of Bagmati River, the Bagmati River Festival is going to kick off from Friday. The festival will be marked by organizing various programmes like sapling, bicycle rally, rafting, and rice plantation.
The 7o days festival to be organized by Nepal River Conservation Trust (NRCT) under the slogan of ‘Green Kathmandu, Clean Bagmati’ will see cleaning up the river bank, campaign against the use of plastic bags and encouraging about the use of paper bags among other public awareness programme.
More than two dozen organizations working in the sectors of conservation of Bagamati are joining hand to make the festival a grand success.
The river had drawn an attraction after one of the Bagmati conservation organizations freed one thousand fishes into the Bagmati a week ago. Environmentalists had criticized the initiation saying it was ‘just murder of 1,000 fish at polluted river’.
Environmentalist and stake holders have long been stressed the need of collective efforts to protect and conserve Bagmati River. Once time crystal like Bagmati is now polluted by increased urbanization coupled with industrialization and sewage disposal. The festival has been organizing since a couple of years aiming to get back the natural beauty of the river.
