Bridge to Everest base camp washed away

KATHMANDU, Nepal-A truss bridge over an Imja stream on the way to base camp of Mt. Everest, the world’s highest peak has been washed away by flood on Wednesday afternoon, leaving the scores of mountaineer in dire situation. The truss bridge over the Imja stream was swept away by the swollen stream.

With the sweeping of the bridge, the way to the base camp has been completely blocked and tourists and locals using this route are hit hard.

‘It was the last bridge on the trail to Mt. Everest Base camp from here,’ quoted state news agency RSS as Dorji Gyalzen Sherpa, Chairman at the Tabuche Buffer Zone Users Committee, Khumjung as saying.

Mountaineers heading to base camp must choose an alternative way following the damage of the bridge, Sherpa said. In the meantime, locals stressed the need to construct the bridge as soon as possible, otherwise they will face tough time.
