Sherpas demand more compensation

KATHMANDU, Nepal–Blaming that the government was ignoring them by providing just small amount as compensation, the Sherpas have further demanded Rs 5 million each as compensation to the victims of mountain guides and other staffs killed in the April 18 avalanche.

The Sherpas who amassed together in the capital on Saturday on the occasion of the fifth General Convention of Nepal Sherpa Association (NSA) on Saturday, exerted pressure to the government to provide Rs. 5 million each as compensation to the bereaved families.

Stating that Sherpas have been major means in promoting mountain tourism, they further said that they were realizing apparent discriminating by providing a meager amount as compensation to the bereaved families which clearly indicates that the government was not serious about improving poor conditions in which they we are working.

The government generates millions in revenue from tourists climbing Mount Everest, each year.

According to them, the demand of the hefty amount is not only about providing relief to the bereaved families, but also to make the government serious about addressing other demands including safety of the Sherpas.

As many as 13 mountain guides had buried to death while three are still missing in the incident. The government has so far provided Rs 500,000 each to the bereaved families. It was the deadliest ever accident in the history of mountain in the country.
