Veteran climber Garra dies on Mt. Dhaulaghiri

KATHMANDU, Nepal-A Spanish climber who struggled for three nights and days sans food, water and little oxygen in freezing temperature after a fall on Mt. Dhaulaghiri, located in north central Nepal died, his family has confirmed on Monday.

Veteran mountaineer Juanjo Garra, 49, died despite of his struggle with snow and wind till his last breadth on the world’s seventh highest mountain after a rescue attempt at an altitude by a chopper failed.

“Juanjo stays in heaven” using Garra’s personal blog and Twitter account, his family said.

According to the blog Garra and the Sherpa were stranded in heavy snow, strong winds and temperatures as low as minus 23 centigrade (minus 9 Fahrenheit).

According to the family, Garra and a Sherpa slid on Thursday, causing the Spaniard no more able to stand, while coming down from the 8,167-meter peak.

“The news reaching us from Dhaulagiri is not what we expected,” a Tweet on the family’s account said Thursday. “Juanjo has suffered an accident and is trying to reach C3 (camp three).”

Meanwhile, AP in its report said Miquel Angel Corts, a Garra family spokesman, said the dead climber’s body would not be recovered from the mountain because such an effort would put the lives of others at risk.

In the Meantime, Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation is yet to verify Gara’s death.
