KATHMANDU, Nepal – The aviation regulating body of the country Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) has formed a rapid action unit under its direct supervision that will work on the problems as emerged in the country’s aviation sector.

The unit has been formed to address the recent ban imposed by European Commission to fly Nepali domestic airlines in its member states’ sky.

A CAAN source informed that the seven-member unit, led by former CAAN director general Tri Ratna Manandhar has been formed to work on shortcomings identified by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), a UN body, that propelled the EC to ban Nepal-based airlines from flying into the European Union.

It has been learnt that the unit will particularly focus on addressing short-term issues like strengthening the legal framework by making amendments to regulations on air accidents and safety as recommended by ICAO.

Earlier, ICAO had asked CAAN to make amendments to the Civil Aviation Regulation. CAAN has already identified changes that need to be made in the regulation and forwarded it to the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation.

Alongside, the ministry is also making amendments to the Non-military Air Accident Investigation Regulation and preparing a new regulation on search and rescue.

The CAAN has planned to inform the ICAO about efforts that is making to strengthen legal framework on air safety and to remove the ban by this month end.

On December 5, the EC, in a statement, said it had banned all Nepali carriers from flying into or within EU. The decision was taken citing high rate of air accidents in Nepal and ineffectiveness of the aviation sector regulator in raising the country’s air safety standard.
